Review of the year 2018

A

very Happy New Year to you from on behalf of the Ely Cathedral Business Group committee. 2018 was a very exciting year for us for a number of reasons. Attendance at our Fourth Monday discussions is at an all time high, with many local business people taking advantage of the networking opportunity, we saw the return of our Celebration of Business in Ely Cathedral - now established as one of the top business exhibitions in our region and, as a result of a fresh collaboration between the Cathedral, Bishop Laney Sixth Form and the business community, local students benefitted from a series of mock interview sessions and workshops on crafting CV's and personal statements.

Here are some of my highlights from the year gone past:

Fourth Monday Forums

In January we kicked off our Fourth Monday series with a talk from Tracey Harding of Visit Ely on the challenges facing tourism and the role social media plays in adapting for the 21st century.

Celebration of Business

April saw the return of our Celebration of Business exhibition. Over 100 businesses exhibited their services and wares in the awe-inspiring Ely Cathedral and participated in workshops led by Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce.

Student Mentoring

In June members of the ECBG network led a morning of mock interviews and workshops on writing CV's and with students from Bishop Laney Sixth Form. The students learnt first hand what they could expect from a formal interview situation. Panelists offered advice on how to make a good impression, how not to perform in an interview, and on the sort of qualities employers would be looking for from their candidates. The students also participated in workshops on writing CV and personal statements.

How to be good

In September the author and journalist Francis Spufford led a series of discussions with an oncologist, a novelist, a soldier, an HR professional and a journalist exploring the rules, the responsibilities, the potential and the pitfalls of their work.

Autumn Discussion

Our annual Autumn Discussion was held in Ely Cathedral on 11 October and featured guests from Francis Spufford's How to be Good series. Together, they compared notes with the Mike Bushore, the CEO and Board Director at Tyler Capital, a London-based trading firm, focused on the systematic application of machine learning to the global financial markets. Mike gave an interesting talk on the challenges in programming ethical responses into AI robots.

The B Word

To conclude our Fourth Monday series, in December members of ECBG took part in a Brexit debate in the Royal Standard Pub. The motion that the “UK should still leave the EU” received 7 votes but was beaten by 19 in favour of remaining.

Foodbank Appeal

Ely Cathedral Business Group are delighted to have raised over £700 for the Ely Foodbank over the course of 2018. In the Isle of Ely alone 2428 three-day emergency food supplies given to people – our neighbours - in crisis last year. Please give generously.

Thank you to Avon Cosmetics Ltd, G's Fresh Ltd, Marshall of Cambridge (Holdings) Ltd and Ridgeons who's generous sponsorship enabled us to deliver this programme of events.
